Honors College

The Honors College at Texas A&M University-Texarkana's offers motivated undergraduate students the opportunity to expand their understanding of their areas of study, develop leadership skills in and beyond the campus environment, and to work closely with faculty mentors in student-driven research projects.

Admission to the Honors College

Incoming First time in college students:

  • Holders of the Soaring Eagle, Valedictorian/Salutatorian, and Presidential Scholarships are automatically eligible for membership in the Honors College
  • Holders of the Eagle Elite or Ascending Eagle scholarship who have a 3.5 or higher GPA are automatically eligible for membership in the Honors College
  • Other first time college students interested in applying to the Honors College are encouraged to visit our website (TAMUT Honors College) for additional information and a link to our Honors College Application.

Transfer students:

  • Holders of the Maroon or Golden Eagle scholarships with at least a 3.25 collegiate GPA are automatically eligible for membership in the Honors College
  • Other transfer students interested in applying to the Honors College are encouraged to visit our website (TAMUT Honors College) for additional information and a link to our Honors College Application.

Current students:

  • Existing students interested in applying to the Honors College are encouraged to visit our website (TAMUT Honors College) for additional information and a link to our Honors College Application.  
    • Students applying to the Honors College who have below a 3.25 college GPA will submit a brief essay outlining their qualifications for Honors membership

Program Requirements

The Honors College offers a unique curriculum that enhances every major at A&M-Texarkana. Every student will have the opportunity to take innovative, thought-provoking courses, to work one-on-one with faculty mentors, and to enrich their time here at A&M-Texarkana through Honors College events. 

Students must complete both the Academic and Co-Curricular requirements to be eligible for graduation with Honors College distinction.  

Academic Requirements:

The academic requirements of the Honors College are built around the accumulation of academic achievements. There is a lot of flexibility on what those can be, but they can include Honors-sections of existing courses (almost always core curriculum courses), stand-alone Honors courses (those with a HONR prefix), converting existing non-Honors courses into an Honors course by working with the faculty member, stand-alone Honors projects, and Honors theses. Successful students should have a minimum of four semesters of academic achievements; students may also complete more than one achievement in a semester.  

Co-Curricular Requirements:

Honors College students are also expected to fulfill co-curricular requirements. These are designed to engage students with campus, their colleagues, and the community.  They include successful attendance and participation at the colloquium series, Honors workshops, academic conferences, and similar opportunities will earn points towards overall co-curricular requirements. Colloquium Series 

A core part of the co-curricular life of the Honors College is the colloquium series. The Honors College sponsors several several colloquiums throughout the semester designed to give presenters the opportunity to discuss their research and to provide an engaging and enriched university experience. Presenters usually include university faculty and Honors College students from across disciplines. These presentations are open to all university students, staff and faculty, and the general public.

Academic Conferences

The Honors College encourages and supports students in presenting their work at regional and national conferences. 

Community Engagement 

Service to the community is an important aspect of being a member of the Honors College. Honors students are encouraged to be active participants in the university and broader community. The Honors College facilitates community engagement opportunities.
